If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure where to start, a mental health evaluation can be a powerful first step. At Summit Together, we offer compassionate, judgment-free mental health assessments for children ( 6+), teens, and adults across Colorado.

A mental health evaluation is simply a conversation with a trained provider who wants to understand what you’re experiencing. Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, focus issues, mood changes, or something you can’t quite name yet, we’re here to help you make sense of it.

Whether it’s your first time considering an evaluation or you’re looking for a re-assessment, we’ll work together to move toward feeling better.

(1) What is a Mental Health Evaluation?

A mental health evaluation, also called a psychiatric assessment, is a structured conversation with a licensed mental health provider. It’s designed to help you or your child better understand what’s happening emotionally, mentally, or behaviorally.

During the assessment, we’ll talk about:

  • Your symptoms and how they’re affecting your daily life

  • Any past or current mental health concerns

  • Your medical history and family background

  • Social, school, or work challenges

  • Your goals, preferences, and concerns about treatment

This is not a rushed checklist. It’s a thoughtful, conversation to help you feel heard and seen while giving your provider the information that they need to offer the best care possible.

Some medical conditions can show up as mental health conditions so we also want to make sure we’re headed towards the most appropriate treatment for you.

(2) When Should You Consider a Mental Health Assessment?

Everyone struggles sometimes… But if you’ve been feeling off for a while a mental health assessment can help you get clarity and support. It’s a helpful step whether you’re just starting to notice something’s off, or you’ve been dealing with symptoms for some time.

You might benefit from a mental health evaluation if you’re experiencing:

  • Persisting anxiety, worry, or panic

  • Low mood, sadness, or lack of motivation

  • Trouble concentrating, staying organized, or finishing tasks

  • Mood swings, irritability, or emotional outbursts

  • Difficulty sleeping, eating, or managing daily stress

  • Struggles at school, work, or in relationships

  • Concerns about focus, behavior, or emotional health in a child or teen

Evaluations are helpful for people of all ages and especially useful if you’re unsure whether medication, therapy, or a combination might help.

Even if you are diagnosed with a mental health condition, know that taking medications for your mental health is still your choice! For some people, it’s validating enough to have a label to how they’re feeling. Other people want to talk about their questions or concerns with comfort knowing that we won’t force pills on you as we believe treatment looks different on everyone.

We’re here to guide you without judgment, pressure, or rushed decisions,.

(3) What to Expect During Your Mental Health Evaluation

We know meeting with a psychiatric provider for the first time can feel a little intimidating! We’re here to make it as simple, supportive, and stress-free as possible.

Your virtual mental health assessment is a private, secure video appointment where you can speak openly about what you’re experiencing. There’s no judgment and no pressure. Just a conversation focused on understanding you better. We’ll ask you questions to best understand what’s going on, but know that there’s no expectations on how detailed you feel comfortable in talking about yourself.

During your evaluation, we’ll talk about:

  • What symptoms you’ve been having and when they started

  • How your mood, focus, energy, and sleep have been

  • Your medical and mental health history

  • Family background and life stressors

  • What’s been working for you, and what hasn’t

  • Your goals, questions, and concerns about treatment

We take a holistic view of mental health, which means we look at the full picture, not just one part. If a diagnosis makes sense, we’ll explain it clearly and talk about options for moving forward. That might include medication, a referral for therapy, or lifestyle changes tailored to your needs.

(4) What Happens After the Evaluation?

After your mental health evaluation, we’ll walk you through the next steps and answer any questions that you may have. There’s no one-size-fits-all plan, and nothing is done without your input. Together, we’ll decide what kind of care makes the most sense for you or your child.

Depending on your needs, we may recommend:

  • Medication management – If medication might be helpful, we’ll explain your options, answer your questions, and create a safe, step-by-step plan.

  • Therapy referrals – We can recommend trusted therapists or help coordinate care if you’re already in therapy.

  • Lifestyle or supplement guidance – For some people, improving sleep, nutrition, or exploring supplements can make a big difference.

  • Follow-up appointments – If ongoing support is needed, we’ll set up check-ins to monitor your progress and adjust your treatment as needed

Our goal is to help you feel more like yourself by giving you the tools and support to get there.

Specializing in…

  • Mental health challenges can be especially difficult in the early stages of life as children and teens navigate emotions, friendships, school pressures, and identity development. Struggling with anxiety before a big test, outbursts of frustration that seem uncontrollable, or feeling lonely can be overwhelming without the right support.

We’re experts at understanding a child’s stages of development and we ensure that each child or teen receives care that relates to their emotional, cognitive, and social needs.

We understand that giving medications to children can be an especially big decision to make! Some parents come to the first appointment still uncertain whether medication is the something that they want to pursue and that’s understandable. We’ll provide you the education you need and different treatment options so that you feel comfortable and safe.

  • We get it. Transitioning from childhood to adulthood can be a lot more difficult than you anticipated. From managing college or career stress to navigating relationships, independence, and your own personal struggles, this stage of life can be more than what you signed up for.

You may feel like you have a foot in both doors where you feel more independent than a child, but not necessarily confident enough to say that you can face world by yourself. Maybe there’s challenges or trauma you didn’t even realize that you were dealing with for a long time until you grew up and now you’re unsure what to do about it. Or maybe you’re trying to build deeper relationships but find yourself self-sabatoging despite your best intensions. And while dealing with all that… let’s talk about how much pressure it is to decide what career you want to dedicate the rest of your life towards!

We understand. And we’re here to help build confidence, clarity, and understanding, emotional balance within yourself.

  • Not all mental health conditions can simple be explained as chemical imbalances.

Trauma isn’t something that just happened in the past - it can feel like a weight you carry every single day. It may show up for you as constant anxiety that prevents you from being safe, even in your own bed. Or maybe it’s the nightmares, flashbacks, or emotional numbness that makes it hard to connect with what’s going on in reality. Perhaps you find yourself stuck in patterns of fear, self-doubt, or avoidance. No matter how much time has passed, somehow you just can’t move on or feel like you’re strong enough.

We recognize trauma comes in many forms, from a single life-altering even to a series of small but deeply impactful, repeated experiences. We want to understand not what you’re dealing with today, but how your past brought you here so that can understand the core of your story and help you heal.
