Genetic Testing
for Mental Health in Colorado
Personalize Your Care Further with GeneSight’s Genetic Testing.
Finding the right psychiatric medication can be a frustrating process of trial and error. At Summit Together, we offer genetic testing for mental health medications to help guide your treatment. Through our partnership with GeneSight, we provide pharmacogenetic testing that helps identify which medications you may tolerate the best based on your DNA.
This test can provide insights into how your body might respond to certain medications used to treat depression, anxiety, ADHD, and other mental health conditions. Our goal is to help reduce side effects, improve effectiveness, and make the treatment process smoother and more individualized.
What is Genetic Testing for Mental Heatlh?
Genetic testing (also called pharmacogenetic testing) looks at how your genes may influence how your body processes certain medications. It does not diagnose a mental health condition. What is can do is give your provider helpful information about which medications might be a better fit for your unique biology.
One common misconception is that genetic testing tells you exactly which medication will work best for your mental health symptoms. In reality, the test shows how your body may process or react to medications such as whether you might break them down too quickly or slowly, or how at-risk you are to side effects. This information helps your provider make more informed decisions when considering options that may be more tolerable or effective for you.
The GeneSight test uses a simple cheek swab to analyze specific genes linked to how psychiatric medications are metabolized. Your provider then uses the results to better tailor your treatment plan.
How Might Benefit from Genetic Testing?
Genetic testing may be especially helpful if you:
Have tried multiple medications with limited success
Have experienced strong side effects in the past
Are starting psychiatric medication for the first time
Feel unsure about your current treatment plan
We offer genetic testing for children, teens, and adults.
Genetic testing is completely optional but for many patients, it provides valuable insight and a peace of mind.
This test can be integrated as part of our personalized approach to mental health care. Our provider will review your results with you and explain what they mean so that you can make the best decision for yourself.
During your appointment, we’ll review the goals for completing this genetic test and make sure that you understand that financial cost, benefits, and guidelines of the test before its completion.
